Happy Day of Jason, My Beautiful Mutated Favourite Boyfriend!

Okay so in the spirit of Friday the 13th, the day of my beloved Jason Voorhees, the beautiful mutated Mummy's boy, whos maggot infested face just makes me want to give him lots of squishy huggles, I thought I'd give you a BLAAAAAAAGH post of some of my favourite Jason moments and my random Voorhees loving rants!  :D

First of all, I LOVE ALL of the Jason movies...well apart from Jason Goes to Hell which is a bit poo...even if it does have X from The X Files in it, it's just a bit lame.  Even Jason Takes Manhattan, despite the fact I hate EVERYONE in the freakin' movie...well except Jason and the dog, I still think it's an awesome movie.  You've got super cute Jason moments, such as when he's climbing up to the ship when it's leaving saying "I LIIIIIIIVVVVE!!!".  

Ooh, and the bit in NYC when he shows his displeasure to the punk kids with their beatbox.  

And when he's drowning in the sewers being all cute and "Mommy, help me!".  He is lovely.  With the Julius death you have one of my favourite deaths, I mean what's cooler than punching some dudes head off and it rolling into a dumpster!?!  

AAAAND, when Jason first gets to Manhattan and sees the hockey mask on the billboard, bwahahahaha, SUPER cuteness! <3  I mean look at him, isn't he so cute!?! :D

Anyhoo, I does not care what the haters say, it's a fun film, yup yup yup!  They all are!  Even Jason X!  Say what you like about Jason X but Todd Farmer had it right.  The film is stupid amounts of fun, and not only does it have the best death EVER with the liquid nitrogen death...it also has the total boner~gasm of a tribute to another of the best ever Jason deaths, the sleeping bag death.  This was a film made by a horror fan who likes to have fun, for other horror fans who like to have fun...end of!

Woot, GO Jason... slam them bitches! ;)

Anyhoo, Jason X was a great precursor to all of the awesomeness that Todd Farmer was to inflict on the world with his 3D films, in fact, in my humble opinion, Todd Farmer is the BEST when it comes to 3D movies...say what you want but that man has an eye for all of the good things about 3D, and less of the utter shite that can also be spewed from it!!! :D

This is of course me babbling about the Jason's that most people won't admit to liking to, I always feel the need to defend them.  Thankfully unlike other people, I have no concern with admitting to liking such awesome films, haha.  

Now when it comes to original Jason movies, Part 2 is my all time favourite.  Amy Steel is an absolute doll and Ginny is my favourite Friday the 13th chick...which meant that when I got to interview her it was a horror girls dream! <3

Friday the 13th Part 3 continues the Jason awesomeness with my 2nd favourite Jason chick and the fact that its in 3D makes it all the more awesome.  Haha.  I remember a while back where I saw it on TV and was like, why does it look so funny?  Turned out it was in 3D.  Haha.  Yeah, I felt like a right spazz!  And I looked like one as well when I got out a pair of 3D glasses from a Scarecrow Batman comic to watch it, haha.  

So yesss, we get a lotta good deaths in episode 3...AND Jason gets his mask!  From Shelly, one of the most annoying characters in the series...but he does give Jason his mask so you gotta give him some credit! :)

Now even though I'm all about my final girls kicking my boyfriends butt...Tommy Jarvis in Part 4, played by Corey Feldman, he is definitely a favourite.  Tommy is fucking awesome.  End of.  Even in Part 5 and 6.  Not as much as in Part 4 but certainly a challenge of awesomeness.  

The other amazing thing about Part 4...CRISPIN FREAKIN' GLOVER!!!  Now if you don't LOVE Crispin Glover there is clearly something wrong with you, the guy is a fucking legend and his part in Friday the 13th most definitely accentuates that.  

Ooh, now I know I mentioned the original sleeping bag death before in Part 7 as being a favourite, so is the death of Sheriff Garris in Part 6...total spine snapping awesomeness! :)

At the end of the day, Jason is one bad ass mother fucker...nothing can kill his sexy maggot ridden ass, and y'all know it bitches!  These wenches might think they can kill my baby but at the end of the day.....

Women in Horror Awareness Month 2011...So It Begins, mwahahaha.

Last February saw the start of something ever so slightly special, the first annual Women in Horror Awareness Month.  The brainchild of the wonderfully demented and perfectly peculiar, Hannah Neurotica, Women in Horror month is our way, collectively working together to let the world know that there’s more to women in horror than just tits and scream queens.  And that, SHOCK HORROR…this isn’t a new thing!!!  The only difference is that now we’re standing up and letting everyone know that we’re here, and in all capacities. 

Numerous events were held around the world including the UK event Ghouls on Film.  Hosted in Birmingham, England by one of my bestest friends in the universe, Nia Edwards-Behi, Ghouls on Film was the chance for me not only to catch up with one of my favourite girlfriends, it was the chance to witness some brilliant shorts and two movies with women at the helm.  It also gave me the chance to spend a little bit of time with Horror Channel darling Emily Booth as well as other kick ass gals in horror.

One of my favourite things about Ghouls on Film was having the chance to see the almighty awesomeness of Dead Hooker in a Trunk!!!  This underground tribute to the good old grindhouse days is one of the most fun movies I’ve seen in the past few years.  Directed by and starring the gore-geous sick and brilliant Soska sisters, DHIAT is a wonderful example of girl power in the industry. 

Jen and Sylvia Soska have fully embraced this awesome month, setting up a blood drive and encouraging everyone to Bleed for Women in Horror, how morbidly delicious right!?!.  This is something that the girls will be doing again this year I’m rather excited to have been asked to be part of their video to advertise this bloody mission.  Mwah!

Another wonderful lady who I’ve had the priveledge of net meeting is Dai Green, managing editor of Horror News.net and the most totally PC woman on the face of the planet.  Who LOVES clothes and is never naked, HA!  Yes, delightful Dai was a naughty girl and got herself kicked off Facebook for a picture that caused offense to some prudish people.  We all campaigned to get her original profile reinstated but the gods of Facebook were dicks and she had to start all over again.  That’s a whole lotta friends to recollect.  She’s all back now though and makes sure she behaves and is always wearing as much clothes as possible.

Now this is just a few of the beautiful, sick and twisted, gore loving ghouls that I befriended last year.  In fact, it was this time last year that I was on my wee mission to raise awareness of Women in Horror Month, getting quotes and doing interviews with not only girls in the industry but the guys as well.  Directors such as Adam Green and Joe Lynch know just how important the girls are too and have utmost respect for them.  Eli Roth in particular has a fondness and respect for Hannah and her Zine, Ax Wound, as does Frank Hennenlotter and Herschell Gordon Lewis. 

Last year was ace in the fact that I got to speak to one of my favourite horror chicks of all time, Amy Steel (now Pulitzer).  Amy was of course the first girl to ever take on Jason Voorhees; this was back in 1981’s Friday the 13^th Part 2.  20 years later and she still stands out as one of horror’s most awesome, kick ass females.  You can read my interview with her here.

I’m really looking forward to getting into all the goodness that this year is going to bring and I can’t wait to work with all these amazing women again and to do my thing.  I’m even going to give blooooood myself.  I’m not promising that I won’t pass out though, haha.  My other statement for the month, one that Hannah and I would love it if you joined us in doing so is dyeing our hair BLOOD RED for the month of February!!!  Mwahahahaha.

WiHM - Amy Steel Interview

Here's an interview I did with the lovely Amy Steel (now Pulitzer) for this past February's Women in Horror month for your reading pleasure. :)

So Amy Steel, widely regarded within the horror community, and in the humble opinion of the Jeniverse, to be one of the most kick ass women in not only the world of Mr Voorhees, yet the world of horror overall.  I mean how many characters since have taken that Ginny ethic and basically kicked some serious fucking ass!?!  This lady is a legend and as soon as the whole Woman in Horror thing was posed to me, she was the first person I thought of and I am proud to present to you her wonderful answers to my geektastic questions.  Please note awesomeness to Chris Carter question.  Sooo, without further adu……

Alfred Hitchcock and Tobe Hooper are the directors who provided me with some of my earliest horror memories with The Birds and Poltergeist.  What are your first movie memories within the genre and do you have any particular favourites?

The Blob scared me to death at a 10 year old sleepover. From there, it was The Exorcist that still haunts me. 

It has been some 19 years since you kicked Jason’s ass, what does it feel like to be one of the original kick ass slasher chicks?

Amazing. I love the character of Ginny. Funny I had no idea of who she wasn't until many years later. Hindsight 20-20 kind of thing. Now I look to her for inspiration when I am afraid- just in facing challenges. Not lie there as some monster chasing me....

Would you ever like the chance to reprise the role?

Yes! Why not? Ginny grows up...funny, you know I'm a therapist now, and that's what Ginny was studying. I didn't remember that until a fan reminded me. I know I for one would be psyched to see Ginny again!!!

Do you still keep in contact with any of your old co-stars?

I do a convention every now and then. I saw John Fuery a couple of times. And Steve Dash. We all went to the Ali museum in Loisville. 

Friday the 13^th Part 2 was your first movie.  What was it like going into this setting as a 20/21 year old female?  What were the attitudes towards women in the genre back then? 

I think it was time to see women get revenge. Jamie Lee Curtis was no bookend. Women started wearing real clothes and not just halter tops. But then they always have to have that scantily clad femme fatale, don't they. Still do I guess. Honestly, I think I got luck w/ the role of Ginny, on a couple of fronts. She's pretty much who I am, wasn't really a stretch. We have the same energy so you could say I was type cast. But the hard part is really owning who we are as women, all the strength, faith, and calm...at the same time. 

You know something, being typecast in that sort of role is no bad thing if you ask me!  You are portraying the ultimate in female geekery, you’re both beautiful, covered in blood AND killing the bad guy!!!

It seems that there are increasingly more women working behind the scenes in horror.  Did you find that it was male dominated when you were working on Friday the 13^th and April Fools Day or was there more of an even balance?

There was one female producer, but other than that it was all men. Truthfully, other than Jason, the men's roles sucked. Don't you think? Behind the camera, the men were pretty strong. Frank Mancuso, Steve Miner. They appeared to know what they wanted. 

As the creator of one of the strongest female characters in the sci-fi/horror world with Scully in The X Files, Chris Carter likes his women to be strong.  What was it like to work with both him and his wonderful partner in crime, Frank Spotnitz on Millenium?  The same goes for Terry O’Quinn and Lance Henriksen, both genre legends in TV and film.

I've worked with Lance a couple of times. He was cool. Low key in an intense way if that makes sense. I didn't have much interaction with Chris Carter. I think he was in LA- we were in Vancouver. But I thought he was pretty hot. He was quiet, attractive and smart. What more do you want :)

Are there any women in particular that you admire within the horror industry?  Who is you personal favourite female horror icon?

I don't follow horror films.  Just not into seeing people sliced and diced. But I enjoy the fans who do though. They fascinate me. 

You left behind an academic career to pursue modelling and acting, do you feel that there are things that you missed out on because of this?

No. Those were amazing times I had. Ah, the places I saw and the things I did....so many opportunities. Now I'm back into the academia. It all happens when it’s supposed to I guess. 

If you could do it all again, would you do anything differently and are there any roles that you wish you’d gotten or at least went for?

Yes, I'm still heartbroken I didn't get Northern Exposure. As for doing things differently, I wish I had more confidence to kick more Hollywood ass, but honestly, I don't think it’s in my cards. My priorities are very different and the connections I want to make with people are based on different values. I don't think I could compartmentalize as well as others. 

What has been the most enjoyable part of your career to date and is there anyone you’d still love to work with?

I did a commercial for a gas company about 10 years ago in Monument Valley, Utah. I was riding a Palomino horse at sunrise and full speed through the sage. The only direction I received was to, "gallop faster." Doesn't get much better than that, now does it?
