A Happy Geek Reports First Official Picture of Idris Elba in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim!

Okay so I've been seriously nerding over the thought of Pacific Rim since it was first announced!  The thought of three of the most super fucking rad~core actors on the planet in a movie with "big fucking monsters and big fucking robots", is enough to make any geek smile!  The actors I'm talking about are The Wire's Stringer Bell, a.k.a. Idris Elba, Sons of Anarchy's Jax Teller, a.k.a. Charlie Hunnam AND It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Charlie Kelly, a.k.a. Charlie Day!!  Now these are three of my all-time favourite actors out of my all-time favourite shows...and to get a nerd~gasm of that proportion, it's pretty fucking epic!!  SOOOO, it was with great pleasure that I opened up my copy of Total Film just there and not only found a big ass poster of Jeremy Renner for The Bourne Legacy, I also stumbled upon a VERY SEXY looking Idris Elba in Pacific Rim!!  

Obviously a del Toro film could not be complete without his work "boyfriend" Ron Perlman, Clay Morrow to Charlie Hunnam's Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy.  I was already beyond psyched for this movie, and now seeing Idris Elba looking this freakin' rad...I'm all the happier!!  Pacific Rim is slated for a Summer 2013 release, and all I'm saying is that I fucking hope the world doesn't end on December 22nd...that would be a BIG fucking shame!!! :P

Why I Believe Everyone Should Check Out the BBC's LUTHER, Starring Idris Elba!

When it comes to my favourite shows, my all time favourites have come out of the States/Canada!  We're talking The X Files, LOST, Twin Peaks, V, My So-Called Life, Felicity, Family Guy, American Dad and most recently Sons of Anarchy and Justified!  The UK has had some belters over time, including Spaced, The Inbetweeners and Skins.  None however even hold a torch to the downright fucking awesomeness of the BBC's Luther!  A show that I have been getting more and more of my American friends to check out and one that they're all coming back to me thanking me for introducing them to it!  The reason why they all come back to thank me is because the show is fucking perfect!  It is one of those shows that leaves you craving more and when it ends you kind of feel sick that you have no more to look forward to for another year!  And oh how that year passes painstakingly slowly!

So what makes Luther different from your other bog standard crime dramas??  Two words...IDRIS ELBA!!!  Combine that with amazing writing and direction as well as a great support cast and you have a top notch show, and one to rival any of the best of the best of zee Yankee Doodle Dandy shows!

The character of DCI John Luther is a horribly complex one, this is an incredibly disturbed man, one with about as many inner demons as the people he sets out to catch!  This however is what makes him such an amazing detective.  Where other detectives would fail to understand the inner psychosis of criminals, Luther gets in there nice and deep like...I'm talking 'bout balls deep...haha!  This is an intense show and despite the seasons being criminally short, each episode packs more into it than many shows do in several episodes.  And what is hard to believe, as amazing as Season 1 is...Season 2 is even better!  The show is intelligent and brutal to a point that you think, holy crap, the BBC are actually airing this at 9pm!?!!

With some brilliant supporting females, this show has the girl power kick too which I always love!  Ruth Wilson as the wonderfully macabre, twisted and scarily intelligent Alice Morgan (pictured above) is always a pleasure to watch.  And the introduction of Aimee-Ffion Edwards as teenage runaway Jenny Jones (pictured below) in Season 2 gave us yet another great female character that was not only fantastic in her own right, she also gave us further insight into Luther as a character and a detective as well.

One thing that I hadn't even thought about but after reading blogs and articles online in relation to the show realised, it's a rarity for a show such as this to have a black detective in the lead.  I've been so compelled with the show, and love Idris Elba so much that I hadn't even thought about that.  It's a good point, however when you have an actor of such caliber as Elba, you don't even think about colour...and neither you should.

So yes, for those of you out there who still need to get the Luther bug, I urge you to do so NOW!  I don't want to give away too much about the show so it's best you just check it out for yourself.  I promise you won't regret it...and if you do you have my permission to slap me!  That's how sure I am that you will find it awesome! ;)  If you want to check out previous blogs I've done on the show you can find them here, here and here!

Charlie Hunnam AND Idris Elba Plus Robots, Monsters and Guillermo del Toro - A Fangirl's Dream!!!

Pacific Rim, the movie that Guillermo del Toro is making instead of The Hobbit.  It features monsters, robots...and two of the FINEST (in every sense of the word!  Sorry but I do have girl hormones, haha) actors that have ever graced our screens.  And that would be Sons of Anarchy's Jax, a.k.a. Mr Charlie Hunnam and The Wire's Stringer Bell/BBC's LUTHER, Idris Elba!  Two incredible actors who both so happen to be English as well...eat that America, ha!  Anyhoo, to say that I have a bit of a boner for this project already is no freakin' joke!  However, the geekgasms continued with the Legendary Pictures panel at Comic-Con, which you can see below...the Pacific Rim part is first after meeting the men behind Legendary Pictures.  

Legendary Pictures were kind enough to give us geeks a taste of the LOGO and badge that my boys shall be sporting as part of their uniform in the movie which I'm pretty sure y'all will agree is pretty darn cool...anyhoo see below for pic! :)  

And yesss, below, the two sexiest men on TV plus, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Charlie Day (need to check out this show now) as well as director del Toro and writer Travis Beacham.  

This movie is going to be a fangirl/fanboy DREAM and 2013 can not come soon enough dammit!!! <3

Luther - Season 2 Kicks off with a Bang! Horror Geeks, Pay Attention, the Show is WICKED!

Alrighty kids, I know I've geeked about Luther in the past (see blogs HERE and HERE) but holy fucking shit, Episode 1 of Season 2 was an absolute fucking corker!  If you haven't already seen this show then I advise you get on it NOW!

I am not going to give any spoilers away for those of you who have yet to see it, just because all these things are best when we don't know what's going on...surprises in these types of shows keep the suspense up and if you're like me, you always love that feeling of being totally surprised.  What I will say though is that the Season 2 opener was pretty god damn brutal, and downright creeptastic!  This is definitely a show for those that love psychological horror!

Luther - Amazingly Dark and Often Brutal BBC Drama Starring Idris Elba!

Luther, the downright fucking awesome serial killer drama from the BBC is set to to return for it's second season very shortly. I didn't actually hear about the show when it was initially shown (I live in a bit of a bubble to be honest, haha!) and it was only some months after the first season had finished that I discovered it. This happened after I'd sat and watched all five seasons of The Wire one after the other and developed a little bit of a loving for bad boy Stringer Bell!  I decided to check out what other stuff he had done, obviously I knew him from stuff like 28 Weeks Later (where he worked with my beloved Jeremy Renner - the two of them have just appeared in Thor as well!) and The Losers but it was Luther that caught my eye.  I mean, Idris Elba AND serial killers...that's like heaven for me!  Instantly I knew I had to see this show, so I got the boxset and cracked on with the six episodes.

The show is dark and brooding, often with a macabre sense of humour, especially when it comes to the delightful Alice, a character who is just perfectly wicked and downright fab in every way!  It's easily the best thing that the Beeb have done in years and to lure Idris Elba back from Hollywood to get him back to his London roots is superb.  The Yanks are constantly stealing our men especially, and damn them, casting them in the best shows ever...aka Sons of Anarchy and The Wire of course.  Anyhoo, all this waffling aside, check out the two trailers below, the first one is for Season One and the second obviously Season Two.  And don't worry, they don't give anything away, it's just nice to be teased.  Sometimes at least anyway. :)

A Great Week for Serial Killers

WOW!!!  Ok, so the past week has been a super massive geekgasm for serial killer movies.  First the stupidly awesome James Franco takes on the role of not only playing Richard Ramirez, it is also going to be his directorial debut.  Ooh and to add to the awesomenss, Chris Cornell is producing!!!  How awesome is that!?!!!!  *insert super rad picture of James Franco playing Dungeons and Dragons as Daniel Desario <3 in Freaks and Geeks. *

Anyhoo, after that awesomeness I didn't in a million years think that I would get even more totally radder than rad awesome serial killer movie news and then I get told that Dominic West is playing Fred West!!!!!!!!!!!  I mean, guh yuh!!!  It's like my sick twisted McNulty fantasies from The Wire Season 5 are coming to fruition.  *insert McNulty pic just for fun ;) *

So yay, lots of super squeeeee'ing and thinking that this is going to be a very good year for zee serial killer movie!!!! <3

  

Idris Elba's BBC Serial Killer Drama - Luther

To say that I’m partial to a good bit of murder is an understatement.  Add to that an obsessive detective/FBI agent storyline, one who shall stop at nothing to stop a serial killer or mass murderer; I’m all ears and eyes.  Obviously still attached to my own body, those story lines can be saved for another time, mwah!  This being the case, whilst checking out what Idris Elba had been up to lately, I came across the BBC show Luther.  Luther is the story of DCI John Luther, a detective working in the serious crimes unit. 

“He is dazzling, obsessive, possessed - and sometimes dangerous in the violence of his fixations. But Luther has paid a heavy price for his dedication; he has recently suffered a mental breakdown following the traumatic investigation into child serial killer Henry Madsen. On his return to duty, Luther struggles to balance the psychological demands of his work at the same time as trying to save his marriage to his wife, Zoe.”

This description alone leaves me wanting for more, I mean what’s not to love!?!  The added bonus comes with the fact that Luther is played by the wonderful and downright gorgeous Idris Elba.  Now I had seen him in loads of stuff before and really liked him but it wasn’t until The Wire that I became rather fixated with him.

Playing Stringer Bell, the drug lord who used his intelligence and perception to realise that after some time, property was the way forward in a game that was constantly changing.  Despite all of his flaws there was something incredibly charming about him.  I loved Detective McNulty’s obsession with catching him out and sending him down for life, both Elba and Dominic West played off each other brilliantly.  The same could be said for Stringer Bell’s interaction with Michael K. Williams character Omar Little.  Absolutely cracking TV writing, some of the best ever, without a doubt!!!

Anyhoo, in the time that I have sat writing this it has just come to my attention that the great man has actually been nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in Luther!!!  He's up against Al Pacino which is no mean feat, so hells yeah to Idris for being part of Team Awesome UK in this years Globes!!!

This has made me even more excited about seeing Luther, I've asked my sister for the DVD for my Christmas so here's looking forward to some obsessive Elba killer action, mwahahahahahaha.  And you can be sure that I shall let y'all know what I think once I've seen it.  Expect lots of potential gushing, haha.
